Please share this with your colleagues. I have changed my house bulbs with the compact fluorescents and it has made a difference in my own power bill. Can you imagine how much a hotel could save in the long run by replacing just a few bulbs per month? According to the government's ENERGY STAR(r) program, by simply replacing a 60-watt incandescent light bulb with an equally bright 13-watt ENERGY STAR qualified light bulb, a household will save more than $30 in energy costs over the lifetime of the bulb. Every light changed also promotes energy independence and preserves our environment for this generation and the next. If all the households in the United States changed just one incandescent light bulb to an ENERGY STAR qualified one, enough energy would be saved to light all the households in Washington, D.C., for over 3,960 days-that's over 10 years! In addition, over 8.9 billion pounds of greenhouse gas emissions would be prevented from entering our atmosphere, an impact similar to removing a line of cars stretching from Atlanta, Georgia to Los Angeles, California! Changing out more than one inefficient bulb and taking other energy efficiency measures will add to these results. For many reasons, promoting energy efficiency is to be energy smart! In its seventh year, the ENERGY STAR Change a Light, Change the World Campaign is a national challenge held each October-November to encourage every American to take a step to reduce our energy demand. With nearly 20 percent of our nation's residential electricity used just to light homes, Americans can reduce energy demand by taking the ENERGY STAR Change a Light Pledge at www.energystar.gov/changealight and then following through by changing out an inefficient light bulb to an ENERGY STAR qualified bulb. In the process, households save energy, money, and preserve our environment. In 2005, more than 70,000 people in all 50 states and U.S. territories took the ENERGY STAR Change a Light Pledge, and if all of those pledges were fulfilled, we will avoid using more than 23 million kWh of energy and prevent more than 33 million pounds of greenhouse gas emissions! The goal for this year's Campaign is to receive 500,000 ENERGY STAR Change a Light Pledges and lighting change-outs from individuals throughout the country. Hundreds of national, state and local government leaders, utilities, manufacturers, retailers, schools, congregations and other organizations are expected to participate. Federal employees are invited to join in the 2006 Campaign, too! Simply go to www.energystar.gov/changealight to take the Pledge and learn how together, we can Change a Light and Change the World! Or if your agency is interested in participating in the Campaign, go to www.energystar.gov/joinCAL for all the details! The 2006 ENERGY STAR Change a Light, Change the World Campaign is sponsored by the Partnership for Home Energy Efficiency comprised of EPA, DOE and HUD. The goal of the Partnership is to reduce residential energy use by 10% over the next 10 years. The Partnership web site is www.energysavers.gov.
