The Southern Energy & Environment Expo is a three-day public event designed to showcase modern, sustainable energy technologies and regional "green" enterprises in a context of responsible environmental stewardship for the Southern Mountain Region.
The S.E.E. Expo will demonstrate proven alternatives for the sustainable development of the region, merging together the economic, environmental and energy opportunities presently available. By working together for the future of our region and our children, we can make a difference!
Anticipated attendance is for more than 10,000 people over three days. The Western N. C. Agricultural Center (Exit 9 off Interstate 26, across from Asheville Regional Airport) is also the site (at other times) for the N.C. Mountain State Fair and many other large events, making it ideal for easy public access and on-site services.
Exhibit booths are still available for both commercial enterprises and non-profit organizations.
Exhibits will feature sustainable energy technologies and conservation, energy-efficient products, local and regional "green" enterprises, regional environmental organizations and advocacy groups, low-impact development, organic agriculture, sustainable forestry and much more.
Workshops and presentations will be offered at no extra charge to the public during the course of the S.E.E. Expo. These workshops and presentations will cover such topics as solar energy, wind power, small-scale hydro, alternative building techniques, community activism, environmental alternatives to present practices, and much more. Exhibitors will be eligible, and are encouraged, to offer workshops or presentations of their services, products or interests, at no extra charge to Exhibitors, within the S.E.E. Expo guidelines and as scheduling permits.
Large displays and demonstrations of Exhibitors, such as solar systems, wind plants, and alternative vehicles will be accommodated in an outdoor area adjacent to the main indoor Exhibit Arena.
Entertainment will be provided during the course of the weekend by regional artists and musicians at no extra charge to the public, except for the scheduled Saturday night Benefit Concert, which will have a separate admission fee of $12.

Disposal of batteries, many of which qualify as hazardous material, is a problem for many cities and counties. The Rechargeable Battery Recycling Corp. (RBRC), an Atlanta-based non-profit, public service organization, has come up with a way to help. RBRC has announced that its nationwide recycling program, Charge Up To Recycle!, is now available free to local communities. Through the program, RBRC collects all portable, rechargeable batteries, including nickel-cadmium, nickel metal hydride, lithium ion and small sealed lead. The group replenishes supplies, such as recycling boxes, for community recycling centers. More than 300 communities in the United States and Canada currently take part in Charge Up To Recycle. We are in a dilemna on disposing of these. Our current drum recycler will not take them, the vendor does not want them back and we can not put them in our metal or cardboard recycling areas due to the combination of the two materials. It would be time consuming and costly for us to attempt to separate the two. Are there any ideas out there to help us dispose/recycle these? Is there anyone out there who could use these drums? Please contact me if these drums interest you or if you can help out in any way. Regards, Dorothy *************************************************************** Dorothy D. Could be a marketing opportunity with your logo on them for community use. Flourescent lamp collection is often done in these types of containers and environmental companies doing this work may be interested. We appreciate everyone's participation. One of the best recycling market resources available currently, is the Directory of Markets for Recyclable Materials, available online at www.p2pays.org/DMRM/ . The directory gives the names, locations and contact information for a number of companies that handle recyclable commodities, including fiber drums (listed under "paper"). Is the raw material you are using something that you can buy in bulk (by tank or truckload) or in returnable totes? If so, that may be the way to go to eliminate the drums altogether. How many drums are generated on a weekly average? Depending on the quantity of materials that you purchase, you may have some bargaining power with your vendor. In essence, the vendor is working for you. They want your business and may be willing to negotiate different packaging, returnable packaging or more environmentally friendly packaging for your raw materials. If you approach them about modifying the packaging to meet your needs, make sure you speak with the appropriate person in management at the vendor's facility. A letter to the vendor may have more punch than a phone call. Never underestimate your power of negotiation as a purchaser. Don't write off the concept of vendor back-hauling empties. Remember, they want your business. Are there other vendors of the same material at a competetive price and quality? If you have exhausted those avenues with no success, you may want to call other industries that may be able to use the drums. Call your Chamber of Commerce to see what types of industries or businesses are in your area. There may be some that could use the drums. Just as a heads up to you and other businesses in this region, the NC Division of Pollution Prevention and Environmental Assistance is working toward developing a waste exchange in which businesses can exchange waste products for re-use. We will keep you posted. Please do keep us informed as to your progress in working out your drum waste situation. If you need further assistance, let us know. With this switch came ~55 gallon fiber drums with metal rings on the top and bottom. The raw material is in plastic bags inside these drums, so the material rarely touches the drum.
