The City of Raleigh Solid Waste Services has curbside yard waste
collection using the criteria below:
The City also has a Yard Waste Center to recycle the yard waste
materials into wood chips, mulch and compost.
The City of Raleigh Street Maintenance Division conducts a Seasonal Leaf
Collection Program. This seems to be relatively successful but it has
been my observation that this legitimizes the practice of "mow and blow"
sending a variety of organic and inorganic debris into gutters and
streets and into the air. It also results in out of season leaf piles
that never get collected, which deteriorate on sidewalks, streets and in
gutters. This must have an effect on storm drainage. Technically these
activities are littering and violate the municipal code.
"Yard waste is any vegetative waste material or debris generated from
landscaping and lawn care activities, such as mowing, tree
and shrubbery trimming, or raking. Yard waste includes grass clippings,
pine straw, branches and leaves. Yard waste is collected
at curbside on WEDNESDAYS ONLY for residents receiving regular backyard
garbage collection.
Separate yard waste from other trash and garbage and make sure it is
free of rocks and other debris.
Place yard waste in the following containers:
A permanent container, such as a garbage can or plastic container, no
larger than 55 gallons, and weighing no more than 75 pounds;
CLEAR plastic bags; or
Biodegradable paper yard waste bags, available at area department,
hardware, grocery and discount stores.
Yard waste may also be tied into bundles of not more than five feet in
length, 18 inches in diameter and 75 pounds in weight.
Logs and limbs more than six inches in diameter or over five feet in
length, stumps or rocks will not be collected"
