When I worked in Greensboro, we conducted an unscientific but conclusive test on the biodegradable bags with yard waste. The most unfortunate thing about the degradability of the bags is that it can't be controlled. We test the bags during the summer when we thought climatic conditions were be the worse for the bags. We found that bags that were left at the curb full of grass clippings for 1 week would degrade to the point of fallling apart when picked up for collection. Add early morning dew and rainfall to the equation and the condition of the bags after one week is even worse. We concluded that the bags could most likely be used in collection programs where the frequency of collection was higher than once/week and/or only leaves were put in the bags.
