[P2assist] Survey question

Rudy & Chuck et. al.,
Thanks for your input, it is much appreciated. I have included 'cathode ray
tubes' in the survey question and have made a strong effort to include that
title along with a description in all literature I circulate to my residents
about the electronics event. I will try to fit in the 3-8 lbs of lead fact
as well if I can still manage to keep the question concise.
Everyone has been giving me great feedback on this, thank you all very much.
I'm hoping to have some good data for future discussions on passing an
Advanced Recycling Fee (ARF) on electronics in NC.
Regards and Happy New Year,
Eileen

I complement you on pointing out that we all are using too many acronyms. I
prefer the practice of using the complete descriptive term the first time,
with the acronym then following in parentheses, and after that, using the
acronym as needed. It takes a little more time, but it helps to include more
people in the discussions. Frankly, I don't know, or perhaps cannot recall,
many of the acronyms. As a result I am forced to ignore some of the
discussions

Eileen--
You should state that from 3-8 pounds of lead are in the picture tubes of
color monitors and color TV sets. (Some people have no idea what a CRT is.)

Dear Eileen,
I am responding more as a survey writer than as a waste professional.
Despite great anecdotal evidence to support this supposition, I submit that
choice "c" should be modified to read "who will likely pass it on" or
probably , or some other modifier. That is, unless 100% of all
manfuacturers of items that might possibly be recycled have stated "c"
(unmodified) as their position. Anything less and you may run into a bit of
flack from these manufacturers if they choose to take exception.
You may also want to clarify in the question (and I don't have the full
instrument before me so therefore lack context) that CRTs and monitors cost
more than traditional recycleables due to the presence of toxics. Simply
stating "more" (a comparative) without the standard it is being compared to
can confuse the respondents.
Hope these suggestions help.

Hello fellow colleagues,
I am getting ready for our 3rd annual electronics recycling event in
Cabarrus County and have decided to add a question to our survey about the
pending electronics ARF. I would like to make the question a bit more
concise (and maybe less abrupt) for the form so I am looking for your
expertise. Please send comments directly to me at

Q. Recycling monitors and televisions costs money because of the cathode
ray tube (CRT). Due to the toxic materials in the unit, it is likely that
they will soon be banned from landfills. How would you like to see the cost
for recycling funded?
A. An advanced recycling fee when purchasing item (similar to that for
refrigerators & tires)
B. A fee when it is being disposed or recycled (like today)
C. By the manufacturer of the unit (who will pass it on to the retailer
and then the consumer)
D. Other (please specify)________________________________
Thank you.
Happy Recycling!
