Don't pitch those old telephone books! In hopes that all
Wake County citizens and businesses will recycle their
telephone books this year, the County has added five new
sites to the annual Telephone Book Recycling Program, which
begins Monday, February 11, and ends Friday, April 12.

The 11th annual recycling event features 34 sites in all 12
Wake County municipalities. Each recycling site is
accessible 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and features a
30-cubic yard container for telephone books and a recycling
               bin for plastic bags.

"A lot of people bring their old phone books to the sites in
plastic bags, and if these are tossed into the same
container as the phone books it can cause problems for our
recycler," said Marshall Parrish, Wake County Environmental
               Program Specialist.

Wake County Recycling Coordinator Lowell Shaw said
participation increased last year when the County extended
the program, so it is running for nine weeks again this
               year.

"Traditionally the phone book collection has run for about
six weeks, but we had great participation with a longer
program last year so we decided to run for nine weeks
again," Shaw said. "Gaining another five sites should really
boost the numbers by giving people more options."
