Raleigh To Recycle Old Computers
On June 3, 2002 the City of Raleigh, in partnership with Wake County, will
begin collecting old computers from Raleigh residents for recycling. The
city is offering the special collection service to support waste reduction
and to keep potentially harmful materials inside computers from disposal in
the county's landfill. There will be no fee for the service.
Residents will need to call Solid Waste Services at 831-6890 or
831-6522 to arrange for the computer collection. Once an appointment is made
the resident will leave the computer at the curbside. Acceptable items
include: computer monitors, cords, processing units, computer speakers,
scanners, parts, keyboards, mice, fax machines and copiers.
Once collected the equipment will be taken to Wake County's
Multi-Materials facility. Residents may take items directly to this facility
themselves if they prefer. It is open Monday through Saturday from 7 am to 4
pm. Acceptable items received at the facility will then be sent to a broker
that sells the material for dismantling of the precious metals located on
circuit boards. Some monitors may be repaired for resale while those that
cannot be repaired are sent for glass recycling.
Residents are reminded that they may also make a tax-deductible
donation of useable equipment to a number of charitable organizations. Call
the city for a list of local options or visit our web page
